Although not a household name, Johannes Eccard can hardly be called an obscure composer. Active during the latter half of the 16th century, Eccard's vocal music was held in high regard by other composers --

Occasionally a CD comes along that is so extraordinary that I must applaud it publicly. The Brazilian pianist Nelson Freire, born in 1944, has had a distinguished performing career, but his is a name known primarily to connoisseurs as one of the great pianists of his generation.

This two-CD set presents all four of Alferd Schnittke’s string 
quartets. The first was composed in 1966, and the remaining three over a
 relatively brief span in the 1980’s.

The first quartet
 is very tonal and contrapuntal. There’s a lyricism I find very 
appealing in the music, perhaps even a neo-romantic undercurrent.

This new release from Naxos presents an interesting picture of Charles Wuorinen’s chamber music output. It starts with his first string quartet from 1971, which serves as a point of reference. Ferdinand Ries is best remembered today (if at all) as Beethoven's   personal assistant. Some music is so durably constructed that it can withstand the poorest performance. If a badly-lead ensemble provided your first exposure to Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, I think you’d still be able to determine that the failings were with the musicians and not the score.
