Your Friday Breakfast Buffet: Enchanting Music!

Nino Rota and Christoph Weyse
We have a superb buffet of Friday morning music for you on this week's Vivace.

We begin with music of Italian composer Nino Rota, his Symphony of Love Songs, followed by the delightful Morning Songs by Danish composer Christoph Weyse.

At 7 am, we'll hear one of those splendid rondos by Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia, as well as an enchanting harp sonata by Krumpholz and a symphony by Jan Zach.

Later in the hour, we'll have another tranquil tunes sequence, and a celebration of two anniversaries from the world of operetta.

Emmerich Kalman: one of our birthday celebrants
At 8 o'clock, we'll make a short visit to the world of opera and we'll end with music of Mozart and Ernst von Gemmingen Hornberg.  Who was he?  Well, tune in and you'll find out!

As ever, I hope you'll join me for Vivace, this Friday, 6-9 am, right here on WTJU-Charlottesville.

Joyful punctuation: birthdays galore!

We all love to celebrate happy occasions. They are the joyful punctuation of life. And this week, on Vivace, we have plenty to celebrate.

Several distinguished composers have birthdays this Friday and we will hear their music. They include Carl Czerny at 7 am, and at 7:30 am, we'll hear a selection of music from another birthday composer, Leo Delibes. Here's a little something to whet your appetite!

Have you heard about world-famous piece of music that was accidentally composed during a golf game in Scotland, 100 years ago? I didn't think so, but you will on Friday.

After 8 o'clock, we have another wealth of treasures to share with you, including music by Piacentino, Carulli and Ziehrer, as well as Charles-Marie Widor's most famous composition -- played by the composer himself in celebration of his birthday.

At the end of the program, Dame Kiri te Kanawa will spare a few minutes from her Downton Abbey commitments to give us a short "listener request" encore from last week, and we'll invite you to dance along to another favorite love song.

There are plenty of great reasons to join me for Vivace this Friday, 6-9 am EST. I hope you will.

You can also replay the program anytime from the WTJU archives. This program will be available for replay through 3/4/14.

Something for everyone on this week's Vivace!

We have a delightful Vivace for you this week.  If you're an early bird, we'll start with a piano trio by Beethoven and the Lute Suite by Johann Sebastian Bach.  The first hour features an all-star cast of musicians:  Vladimir Ashkenazy, Itzhak Perlman, Lynn Harrell and John Williams.

At 7 am, we'll introduce you to the music of Joseph Fiala with his Oboe Concerto in B-Major - it's one of those tunes you'll be humming all day; and later, we'll have some delightful music by Carulli and Glazunov.

At 8 o'clock, we have a special treat for opera fans: a celebration of Puccini.  And we'll end with music of John Field, Mozart and Shostakovich.

There's something for everyone on Vivace this week. As ever, I look forward to the pleasure of your company, Friday, 6-9 am.
